Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.
It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.
Earlier this year, the French government warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children. Germany also advises its people to minimise handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced.
Professor Khurana – a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers – reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper based on the research is currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.
He admits that mobiles can save lives in emergencies, but concludes that “there is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours”. He believes this will be “definitively proven” in the next decade.
Noting that malignant brain tumours represent “a life-ending diagnosis”, he adds: “We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation.” He fears that “unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps”, the incidence of malignant brain tumours and associated death rate will be observed to rise globally within a decade from now, by which time it may be far too late to intervene medically.
“It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking,” says Professor Khurana, who told the IoS his assessment is partly based on the fact that three billion people now use the phones worldwide, three times as many as smoke. Smoking kills some five million worldwide each year, and exposure to asbestos is responsible for as many deaths in Britain as road accidents.
Late last week, the Mobile Operators Association dismissed Khurana’s study as “a selective discussion of scientific literature by one individual”. It believes he “does not present a balanced analysis” of the published science, and “reaches opposite conclusions to the WHO and more than 30 other independent expert scientific reviews”.

Daily Aspirin Useless in Preventing Heart Attacks in Diabetics
Taking aspirin daily has no effect on the risk of heart attacks and strokes among diabetics and should no longer be recommended as a routine medical practice, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Dundee, Scotland, and published in the “British Medical Journal.
“We found no evidence to support the use of either aspirin or antioxidants in the primary prevention of cardiovascular events and mortality in people with diabetes,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers assigned 1,276 diabetic women and men with no history or symptoms of cardiovascular disease to take either aspirin, an antioxidant or a placebo once per day. After eight years, they found no difference in the rate of heart attacks and strokes between the three groups.
Prior research has indicated that a regular dose of aspirin can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events by 25 percent in people with coronary artery disease or a history of heart attack or stroke. Because diabetes is regarded as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and 80 percent of diabetics die of cardiovascular causes, many doctors and professional organizations have also begun recommending treatment of diabetics with aspirin in recent years.
Aspirin can have serious side effects, however, such as gastrointestinal bleeding.
“We have gotten a bit ahead of ourselves with aspirin,” lead researcher Jill Belch said. “We need to think again about using it for primary prevention.”
The study was welcomed by clinical pharmacology expert Peter Sever of Imperial College London.
“It confirms many concerns we have that aspirin is very widely used in the general population without an evidence base to support its overall benefits,” Sever said. “Thousands of people buy aspirin over the counter — I’m forever saying to patients you shouldn’t be taking this. I have had a couple of patients admitted to hospital with major gastrointestinal bleeding when there was no evidence it was doing any good.”

Tai Chi Provides Natural Treatment for Stroke Damage
For at least 600 years, the Chinese practice of tai chi has been used as a form of martial arts exercise that integrates body, mind and spirit. According to the philosophy behind the practice, the slow, fluid postures of tai chi focus concentration while gently working muscles. The result, tai chi practitioners say, is an improved flow of “qi” (sometimes spelled ” chi”), a vital life energy that promotes mind and body calmness and health. Now modern-day scientists are backing up many of these ancient claims. A case in point: a new study shows tai chi can help people recover from stroke-caused damage to their nervous systems.
People who have survived strokes may be faced with lingering problems including maintaining their balance. This is more than just an annoyance and uncomfortable feeling that interferes with their quality of life. It also raises the risk of debilitating and possibly fatal falls. But researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) have found tai chi is a drug-free way to treat these stroke-caused balance problems.
Earlier research has previously shown tai chi can improve balance and reduce falls among healthy elders. So, while at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Christina Hui-Chan, and her colleague Stephanie Au-Yeung decided to see if tai chi would also help stroke survivors. They studied 136 research subjects in Hong Kong who had suffered a stroke more than six months earlier. The participants were randomly placed into two groups for 12 weeks. The control group practiced breathing, stretching and other exercises that included sitting and walking. The tai chi group practiced a simplified form of the ancient martial art consisting of coordinated movements of the head, trunk and limbs that require concentration and attention to balance.
At the end of the 12 week study, the research subjects were given several balance tests. Both the tai chi and the control group performed about the same on a test that involved the ability to stand, walk and sit back down. However, when tested on their ability to maintain balance while shifting weight, leaning in different directions, and standing on moving surfaces to simulate a crowded bus, the tai chi group clearly out-performed the control exercise group. The results of the research are set for publication in a forthcoming issue of the journal Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.
“The tai chi group did particularly better in conditions that required them to use their balance control,” Hui-Chan, professor and head of physical therapy at UIC, said in a statement to the media. “In only six weeks, we saw significant improvements. The ability to shift your weight is very important because all reaching tasks require it.”
In addition to improving balance, Hui-Chan explained tai chi also improves strength and cardiovascular fitness. What’s more, tai chi classes can provide seniors with healthy group interactions that help prevent social isolation, too. She added that most people can learn the art of tai chi if they are taught by a trained instructor.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is also showing interest in the benefits of tai chi. The NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is currently sponsoring studies to find out more about tai chi’s effects, how it works, and diseases and conditions for which it may be most helpful.
L-Carnitine may Prevent and Treat Liver Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), liver cancer is often fatal. In fact, about 21,000 Americans were diagnosed with liver cancer last year and over 18,000 deaths were attributed to the disease. The Mayo Clinic web site points out that not only is primary liver cancer rarely discovered at an early stage, but it also doesn’t respond to current treatments. However, a new study offers hope that a viable therapy could be on the horizon. For the first time, scientists have found evidence that a natural substance may be able to prevent, slow or even reverse the occurrence of liver cancer.
L-carnitine, a naturally occurring amino acid, is synthesized in the liver and kidneys and is also derived from dietary sources, including avocados, tempeh, dairy products and red meat. A team of researchers at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia investigated the role of L-carnitine in the development of liver malignancies and, in their study just published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, these scientists concluded that a deficiency of L-carnitine is a risk factor for liver cancer. What’s more, they found long-term L-carnitine supplementation may prevent the development of liver cancer.
The research team, headed by Professor Sayed-Ahmed of King Saud University’s College of Pharmacy, used an animal model of liver cancer to study how cancer develops when there is a lack of L-carnitine. They also studied what happened to liver cancers when the animals received supplementation with the amino acid. When the laboratory rats had their L-carnitine levels depleted, there was a progressive increase in the activities of liver enzymes along with massive degenerative changes in the liver and evidence of pre-malignant lesions in liver tissues. However, supplementation with L-carnitine resulted in a 100 percent reversal of the increase in liver enzymes compared to normal values and the pre-cancerous liver lesions went away, too.
This is not the first research to show L-carnitine may protect the liver. Noting that liver cancer is usually preceded by chronic inflammation, Japanese scientists published research in the International Journal of Cancer (vol. 113, 2005) showing that L-carnitine effectively protects livers from the production of free radicals caused by inflammation. Earlier research published in the journal Diabetes Care by scientists at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, also found that L-carnitine supplements helped with pain, nerve regeneration, and vibratory perception in patients with chronic diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain).

Stress Worsens Allergies
Being stressed out might cause more severe and longer lasting allergy attacks, according to a study conducted by researchers from Ohio State University-Columbus and presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Boston.
“People may be setting themselves up to have more persistent problems by being stressed and anxious when allergy attacks begin,” researcher Janice Kiecolt-Glaser said.
Researchers had 28 female and male volunteers with a history of seasonal allergies take part in a high stress and a low stress activity on different days. Both before and immediately after each activity, the researchers rated the participants’ levels of stress and anxiety and pricked their skin with a standard allergen.
The low stress activity involved reading magazines quietly, while the high stress activity involved performing tasks in front of a group of “behavior evaluators” – including giving a 10 minute speech and solving math problems without paper – while being videotaped, then watching the tape.
The more anxious a person was after the high stress activity, the greater their reaction to the allergy skin prick test as measured by the size of the allergic reaction, or wheal, on their forearm.
Moderately stressed participants had wheals 75 percent larger after the high stress condition than the low stress condition. Highly stress participants had wheals 100 percent larger after the high stress activity than the low stress one. People who reacted with high levels of anxiety were also four times more likely to have their allergic wheals persist for at least one full day.
This suggests that stress and anxiety may cause allergy attacks to last into the next day. This delayed reaction, known to be resistant to antihistamines, is “really what’s ugly about allergies,” Kiecolt-Glaser said.
Researcher Ronald Glaser speculated that elevated levels of stress hormones and the inflammation proteins interleukin-6 might be to blame for the effect.

How long do we fast for?
